Taking care of tile and grout is fairly simple with diligent effort. Ensuring the grout stays immaculate can be a challenge, especially in moist conditions where mildew and mold can grow. Searching for the right cleaner is frustrating. As you comb the aisle of your local market and try every grout cleaner claiming to leave your tile free of grit, grime and mildew, you become disheartened and disappointed with the mediocre results. After the expensive process of elimination, you realize some are okay, at best. Instead of shelling out cash for mediocrity, consider homemade cleaners with ingredients already found under the cabinet or in the pantry. We at Tough Carpet Cleaning have compiled a handful of popular recipes and steps for do it yourself grout cleaner.
Homemade Floor Tile & Grout Cleaner
Lemon Juice Cocktail: Start with 7 cups warm water and add 1/3 cup lemon juice, ¼ cup vinegar, and ½ cup baking soda, ensure the ingredients are mixed well. Using your preferred application, squirt bottle or sponge it on, cover the grout generously with the formula. After waiting approximately 15 minutes scrub the grout with a small bristle brush, toothbrush works well especially along edges and in corners. Rinse well or wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Hydrogen Peroxide: Directly administer concentrated hydrogen peroxide to the grout and allow it to set for 10 minutes or at least until it has stopped fizzing. Using a small bristled brush, scrub the grout clean, rinse or wipe clean with a damp cloth. This method is ideal for grout that isn’t so much stained, but merely dirty.
Bleach & Baking Soda: This formula creates a paste, you want it fairly thick so it doesn’t run down walls or expound outward. Start with about ¾ cup of baking soda and slowly add about ¼ cup bleach; add only small doses at a time until paste is the right consistency. Use a toothbrush to apply the paste on the grout and slightly agitate it as you. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes or so, scrub well and rinse or wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Vinegar & Baking Soda: These ingredients will result in a past by combining ½ cup baking soda with small doses at a time of approximately ¼ cup vinegar; paste should be fairly thick. Apply mixture with a toothbrush and agitate it somewhat as you apply. After the mixture has done its work for 15 minutes or so, scrub grout well, rinse or wipe clean.
Liquid Dish Soap & White Vinegar: In a squirt bottle mix together equal parts of a mild dish liquid soap and white vinegar. Some people believe nuking the vinegar for 1 minute prior to combining the ingredients add a little extra strength to the formula. Saturate the grout generously, scrub clean and either rinse or wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Please note; some of these ingredients will naturally lighten color, to ensure your grout’s color isn’t compromised, perform a patch test in a small inconspicuous area first.
