Carpet Stain & Spot Removal Guide
In an effort to spread our customer service online to our Greater Las Vegas commercial and residential customers, we have put together a carpet spot removal guide for your convenience.
Cigarette Burns: A mild char from a cigarette, cigar, or fire burn is easily removed with a dull knife gently scraping the blemish.
Fat, Oil, and Wax Stains: These spots can be dissolved with some rags or a handful of paper towels, and an iron. Do not use the “hot” setting, but flip the iron on a “warm” setting, as that can singe the carpet. Place a paper towel over the top of the spot and with the iron and slight pressure on top of the paper towel and the spot will pull out of the carpet.
Glue: With a clean, dry cloth wipe away the residue and repeat until the glue is completely dissolved by rubbing alcohol onto your choice of cotton ball or cloth and gently work the alcohol into the glue blotches.
Gum and Sticky Candy: Freeze the gum or candy by piling up ice cubes and with spoon, or another blunt object, shatter the spot. Pick up the large fragments by hand and vacuum the tiny shards.
Nail Polish: If the polish is excessive blot with paper towels or rags. Apply a generous amount of nail polish removal on a rag and work the polish.
Urine Stains: Blot up the urine with paper towels or dry rags with moderate pressure. Combine one part water and one part white vinegar in a spray bottle and apply the solution onto the stain; allow it to set for minutes or so. Mix ½ tsp of clear, of mild non-bleach detergent with 32 ounces of water and apply it on top of the previous application and blot the treated area with moderate pressure. After the stain is removed, absorb remaining moisture with a series of paper towels or dry cloths.
Water-Soluble Stains: Water-soluble stains such as; wet or latex paint, washable ink, mud, milk, jelly, ice cream, gravy, dyes, food, excrement, colas, berries, and alcoholic are more simplistic spots and can be easily removed. In a spray bottle or a bucket, mix ¼ tsp non-bleach detergent or white vinegar with 32 ounces of water; apply generously without over saturating to the spots and work out with dry rags, blotting up the stain and moisture.
Special Water-Soluble Stains: A bit more complex and tougher to remove is the special water-soluble stains. Examples of such are wine, vomit, tea, mustard, coffee, chocolate, and blood. Combine 1 tbsp ammonia and 1 cup water (if the carpet is made from wool or wool blends use 1/2tsp of mild soap instead of water) in a spray bottle for convenience or a bucket. Apply directly to the area, allow it to set 5-10 minutes and remove with clean, damp cloth and blotting.
General Carpet Stain Removal Tips
Important to Remember: When treating stains, there are a few basics you should know before diving in.
– Perform patch test by applying a small amount of the solution in an inconspicuous area to ensure the home remedy or commercial product will not compromise your carpet; never skip this step.
– Avoid using hot water to treat stains as that can set the stain into the carpet. Never over saturate carpets with water or detergents, it could lead to mold or water damage.
– Begin treating stains by blotting the outer perimeter of the spots and come towards the center; this will prevent the stain from spreading out. To avoid making a bigger mess, do not scrub or rub.
– Dyes and print can potentially transfer onto carpet while you are trying to remove a stain, to avoid this issue; exclusively use white cloths, towels, or paper towels to remove stains.
