As summer has come to a close and fall is here, you are probably ready for your family to fall back into a routine again. It is so fun to have your kids home for the summer and not have the set routine of school during the week but if you are like most people you are ready for school to start too. During the summer you may have traveled quite a bit or had lots of people travel to come see you. When you travel you increase the risk of running into bed bugs. Now is a great time to think about protecting you and your family from any bed bugs that may have found their way into your home.
What Do Bed Bugs Look Like on Carpets?
Let’s start by talking about bed bugs. Bed bugs are bugs that feed on humans while they are sleeping in their beds, hence the name bed bug. Bed bugs change in color depending on whether or not they are full. Unfed adult bed bugs are mahogany in color. Once they eat they change in color to a red-brown color. Baby bed bugs are called nymphs and they are practically colorless. Their shape also is determined by whether or not they have red. When they have not eaten recently they are a broad oval shape. They become swollen and elongated when they have recently eaten. They have six legs and antennae. Adult bed bugs are about ¼ of an inch in length. They are found throughout the United States.
How Do Bed Bugs Get in Mattresses & Carpet?
Bed bugs are can be found anywhere that people gather. They gather in homes, hotels, schools, offices, retail stores, and public transportation. In your home they will find their way into your mattresses so that they can feed on you while you sleep. Bed bugs will also hop into your luggage or onto your pillows and travel from place to place with you. Anytime you take a trip you will want to thoroughly clean out your luggage and pillows and clean all of the clothes you took with you on your trip. Bed bugs like to hide out in your belongings and then infest your house when they arrive there.
Signs of Bed Bugs on Carpet & Mattresses
Once they are in your home they will hide behind baseboards, in cracks, in crevices, in your mattresses and box springs, on your bedding, and in your furniture. They have also been known to hide in your electrical switch plates, picture frames, and wallpaper. The fact that they hide in so many different places is what makes them so hard to get rid of. They come out during the night to find their meals. You may go days without noticing that you have bed bugs in your home. Then you or your loved ones may wake up and notice bug bites. The symptoms of bed bug bites will vary from person to person. Some people will develop an itchy red welt within a day or so of the bite while others may have no reaction at all.
