How to Clean, Disinfect & Sanitize a Used Mattress that Has Stains or Odors in Anthem, NV

Dirty mattresses can lead to indoor allergens and even some minor skin diseases. It is important to have mattresses professionally cleaned between 1 and 2 years with additional mattress cleaning by the owner every 3 to 6 months to maintain a clean and healthy sleeping environment. For those who don’t know who to maintain and clean their mattresses between those deeper cleanings, Tough Carpet Cleaning will share a step by step method on how you can clean your mattress.

How to Clean a Mattress that Has Stains or Odors

Step 1. Start by removing all the bedding and wash it while you clean your mattress. To begin cleaning the mattress you will want to vacuum it thoroughly. Note: Each step will be repeated on the reverse side of your mattress.
Step 2. Most mattresses accumulate bad odors over time. You will want to remedy that by sprinkling baking soda over the surface of the mattress and give it 10 to 30 minutes to absorb the bad odors. You will then need to once again vacuum the baking soda.
Step 3. After you vacuum everything from off of the surface of the mattress, your next step will be to clean all of the stains from off of the mattress. Depending on the type of stain, it may vary on how you would deal with each stain. Here is a break down of the common stains on mattresses and how you would clean them.
Dried Blood – To remove dried blood stains, create a paste by mixing 1 tbsp of liquid dish soap, a tablespoon of salt, and add ¼ cup of hydrogen peroxide. Gently rub the paste on the stain and let it dry. Once dry, scrape off the dried paste. If any of the stain remains, dab a white cloth in the hydrogen peroxide and blot at the stain.
Urine Stains and Vomit – Both vomit and urine stains are cleaned the same way and requires a few steps. Start by making a cleaning solution by mixing 3 tbsp of baking soda, 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide, and two drops of liquid dish soap. With a white cloth, dab or blot at the stain. If that doesn’t work, try a secondary method using 3 tbsp of laundry detergent powder and 1 tbsp of water. Mix them together and lightly spread it on the stain. Let the mixture set on the stain for 30 minutes before removing it. It will dry like a paste and should easily scrape off. Afterward, vacuum the mattress.
Step 4. After you’ve cleaned and vacuumed the mattress, flip it over and repeat all four steps. It also helps to extend your mattress usage by rotating it and flipping it over every time you clean to help spread out the wear.
