What is Rust & How is it Generated?
A reddish-brown oxide film that forms on iron and other metals is rust. The exposure of metal to oxygen and water is the main cause of rust. Rust can accelerate the corrosion process, rust can also be caused by chemicals, such as salt. Iron oxide, or more commonly known as rust can also be in other colors including brown, yellow, orange, and even green. Various chemical compositions of rust reflect different colors. Oxidation of other metals has other names, such as tarnish on silver and verdigris on copper.
What Causes Rust Stains & Marks on Carpets & Rugs?
Usually, rust stains are caused by iron or steel objects that have come into contact with moisture. Screws, nails, and other metal hardware are the most common offenders. The resulting stains can be difficult to remove without the proper tools and techniques when these objects rust.
How Do You Get Old Rust Stains Out of Carpets?
There are a few different methods you can use to remove the rust. Below are a few methods to remove rust from carpet.
1) Create your own DIY solution: Combining equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle is a popular method. Moderately apply this solution to the rust stain and let it breakdown the rust for 5 minutes or so. Follow up a clean cloth or scrub with a brush. Use pure water to dampen a cloth and blot the area thoroughly to rinse the area. Once the area is completely dry, vacuum the area well.
2) On the rust stains on the carpets, use rust removal gel or paste products. It can be found at most hardware stores, but it can be an effective method to use a rust removal gel or paste. To help remove rust stains from carpets, there are many commercial products available. Before blotting it up with a clean towel, simply apply the gel or paste to the stain, and let it sit for several minutes. Whenever you use commercial products, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
3) Use a pumice stone to remove rust. Another option, use a pumice stone in order to rub a pumice stone over the rust stain. It can be effective with this method, though it may take some time and elbow grease.
