Each and every year billions of dollars are spent to repair homes that have been flooded. Homes flood for a large variety of reasons. You may have a water heater that floods your house. Or you may have an appliance that is not working properly and floods your home. Toilets, sinks, and bathtubs can cause flooding. Rainfall may also flood your home. Unfortunately, there is no way to completely safeguard your home from flooding. Even though you can’t control whether or not your house floods, you can control how well it gets cleaned up afterwards.

Difference Between Class 1, 2, 3 & 4 Water Damage

There are different levels of water damage that can occur in your home. If your home is flooded it will be put into one of the four classification levels according to the severity of the flooding. Class 1 water damage is the lowest degree of water damage. It only affects a small area and every little water is absorbed by your carpet or other materials. Each class gets a little worse. When the flooding has reached a Class 4 water damage the home has become so saturated that the structural integrity of the home has been compromised.

Stop Water Leak

No matter what classification of water damage has been done in your home you will want to make sure that you thoroughly clean up all of the water. There are many steps that need to be taken to ensure that you have dried up all the water. The first thing you will want to do is find the source of the water leak. You will also need to turn the water off so that the flooding does not continue.

Document Water & Mold Damage

Once you have stopped the flooding you will want to document the water damage. This will be an important step that you do not want to skip. If you have homeowner’s insurance your insurance company will need documentation of the damage that occurred in order to pay for the damages. It is easy to want to skip this step because it does not seem like the top priority when your home has water all over it.

Extract Water & Dry Carpet

Next you want to start cleaning up the water. You will need to get some trash bags and start throwing away any items that cannot be salvaged. Any items that can be salvaged you will want to move to a place where they can start drying. After that you will want to start removing any standing water. This is especially important because if you do not get all of the water out microorganisms can begin breeding in the water. These microorganisms can cause medical issues for members of you and members of your family. The next step is to dry out your home. Most of the time this step requires equipment that is made just for this purpose.
