Protecting Your Carpet Against Rain Damage in Eldorado, NV with Indoor Entry Rugs & More

We’ve had some unfamiliar weather here in the Valley and surrounding areas over the past few weeks. Families gathered outside and played in the snow, built snowmen and got to experience a phenomenon not often seen here in the desert. We’ve had a rainy, cold Winter season which has probably taken a toll on your carpets. We’re used to sunshine all the time, so when rainy and snowy weather hits us, we realize, we’re not as prepared as we should be. Simply because we don’t see it that often. In lieu of the wonderful weather we’ve been having, Tough Carpet Cleaning would like to offer some helpful tips to assist you in keeping your carpets as clean as possible this Winter season.

Indoor Entry Rug & Outside Walk Off Mats

Having a good, sturdy walk-off mat outside the front door will work wonders for allowing people to knock snow and mud off their shoes before entering the home. Then having another mat inside the home by the front door will give them a place to remove their shoes before walking across your floors.

Carpet Runners & Rugs in High Traffic Areas

One of the best tools you can utilize are area rugs and runners during inclement weather. Some moisture is destined to get in one way or the other, having runners in high traffic areas will keep this moisture off your carpets, keeping them cleaner longer. Runners/rugs are easier to clean than carpets and most can simply be tossed in the wash when they’ve taken a beating. They will take the grunt of the mess without ruining the carpets underneath!

No Shoes on Carpet Rule

Your shoes are going to be your carpets worst enemy during rain or snow. Not only do they get wet, they pick up mud, grass, stems and other contaminants that can get drug throughout your home and cause black marks in high traffic areas. Remove your shoes at the door, then either place them on a designated shoe rack, rug or tiled area to dry until you need to leave the home again. If you have a garage that leads to a laundry room or other area that is tiled, this may be the best way to enter until the weather dries out. This goes for rain coats as well. You don’t want to drip moisture all over the floor so remove those jackets and hang them to dry in a safe, uncarpeted area.

Avoid Muddy Footprints & Pawprints

Pets get excited when it’s time to come back in, most don’t like being outside when it’s rainy or snowy, so they are likely to handle their business and come right back in. While they are out, they are likely to get a bit wet and possibly muddy so it’s best to have a plan in place, so they don’t run across the floors with muddy paws. Try letting them into the garage first to clean them off or place a gate up by the back door to contain them while you clean off their paws before letting them run across the floors.

Vacuum Daily & Spot Clean Often

We highly recommend you vacuum your carpet everyday to twice a day during inclement weather. This will keep your floors free of dirt before it gets ground into the carpets and keep the moisture to a minimum. Slushy stains, wet spots and mud need to be cleaned right away before the stain sets in. If you notice dirty areas, clean them as soon as possible with a good spot cleaner to keep your floors fresh.
