The first thing that you need to know is if the coffee has been left to dry or if the stain is still fresh. If the stain has been left to dry because you had to leave and go off to work then you need to start by loosening the stain up. The best way to do that is to use warm water to place over the stain. This will loosen the dry parts up and give you a better option to reduce and remove the stain. The process can take some time. It is best to use a small amount at a time and let the warm water sit in the stain for a few minutes. Then you can use a cloth to press over the area. This is something that is necessary to remove the excessive liquid. Using a clean cloth and applying pressure is the best way to do that. You want to be sure to not scrub the spot so that you do not create damage to the fibers and you do not spread the stain out larger.

Now that is has been loosened up you want to create a cleaning solution. The best option is to use around two cups of warm water and mix in about a tablespoon of baking soda. This can then be spread on the rug or carpet and then use a clean cloth to press and dab at the area. The remaining part of the stain can be removed with this process. You may need to repeat the process again if the stain is large or if it hard to treat. Then you can use warm water to rinse off any remaining residue that might be left from the cleaning solution that was used.
